Hail history in The Colony

On the evening of Sunday, June 11, 2023, the supercell that dropped a photo-measured 4.25-inch stone in Flower Mound crossed Lewisville Lake and put baseball-size hail on The Colony, with large hail continuing across Frisco; residents' photos from that night show hail sitting in the grass like golf balls from Austin Ranch to the lake shore. Less than a year later, on May 27, 2024, a pre-dawn line of storms hit the city with wind rather than hail: a ham-radio weather station measured a 95 mph gust at 5:45 a.m., the station at Pier 121 on Lewisville Lake recorded 83 mph three minutes later, and by 6:18 an 18-wheeler had been overturned on SH-121 and an RV flipped in a lakeside park. Wind of that strength drives debris into doors and fenders as surely as hail does.

In between, on March 14, 2024 — by HailTrace's count the busiest hail day on record in the United States — the storm that tracked toward Lewisville Lake dropped tennis-ball hail at El Dorado Parkway and FM 423 just north of the city and left The Colony inside the mapped swath, part of an evening that put golf-ball-size hail or larger on more than 51,000 North Texas properties.
