Hail history in Carrollton

Carrollton's defining hail night is still June 6, 2018. Around 12:30 in the morning, a storm crossing far northwest Dallas County dropped baseball-size hail on Carrollton, Coppell and on toward Arlington. Carrollton police confirmed a significant amount of property damage in the western part of the city, between I-35E and the Sam Rayburn Tollway; at the Hebron Trails apartments alone at least ten cars were damaged, and residents reported smashed windows for blocks. One forecaster at the time expected it to become the fifth billion-dollar hailstorm to hit the metro in six years.

More recently, the pre-dawn derecho of May 28, 2024 pushed 70–80 mph straight-line winds across the northern suburbs from Carrollton to Richardson, bringing hail with it and taking down enough trees that neighboring cities declared local disasters. Wind of that strength drives hail sideways into doors and fenders — panels that a vertical storm usually spares.

Go back further and the pattern holds: on June 13, 2012, storms across Dallas and Collin counties dropped baseball- to softball-size hail and cost an estimated $900 million — still one of the costliest hail days in Texas history.
