Hail history in Grapevine

On the evening of Sunday, June 11, 2023, the same supercell that dropped a photo-measured 4.25-inch stone in Flower Mound crossed the lake and put 2.5-inch hail on Grapevine's north side; the storm went on to leave golf-ball hail in Lewisville and Trophy Club and baseball hail in Double Oak and The Colony. Six months earlier, on December 13, 2022, two EF1 tornadoes tore through the city's commercial core — one from the Sam's Club toward the Gaylord Texan, the other touching down at Grapevine Mills — flipping an 18-wheeler in the Sam's Club lot and damaging some 42 structures, with five minor injuries and no loss of life. Storms that strong carry hail and debris together, and the dents turn up on cars parked well outside the damage path.

Grapevine also sits in the path that the metro's worst storms have taken for decades. Around 12:30 a.m. on June 6, 2018, baseball hail fell on neighboring Coppell and the storm was measured at DFW Airport on Grapevine's doorstep; forecasters expected it to become the fifth billion-dollar hailstorm in the metro in six years. And the May 5, 1995 Mayfest storm — hail to 4.5 inches across Tarrant and Parker counties, drifts three feet deep — remains the benchmark every Tarrant County hail season is measured against.
