Hail history in Flower Mound

Sunday evening, June 11, 2023, put Flower Mound in the record books. Around 8:15 p.m. the hail started at quarter size and climbed through golf balls and tennis balls to baseballs; by 8:20 a spotter at Cross Timbers Road and Shiloh Road had photographed a stone measured at 4.25 inches — larger than a softball — while Double Oak reported a grapefruit-size stone of the same measurement, Argyle logged 3-inch hail and Highland Village 2.75 to 3 inches. Residents' photos from that night show hood after hood dimpled like golf balls across the town.

It was not a one-off. On March 14, 2024, baseball-size hail crossed southern Denton County in the early evening — Bartonville, Lantana and Northlake on Flower Mound's western edge — smashing car windows and flipping a construction truck on FM 1171 before continuing toward Little Elm and Frisco. And around 12:30 a.m. on June 6, 2018, the storm that dropped baseball hail from southeast Denton County down through Carrollton and Coppell passed just to the south, close enough that forecasters expected it to become the metro's fifth billion-dollar hailstorm in six years.
