Hail history in Wylie
April 11, 2016 is the storm every hail season in North Texas is measured against, and it happened here. On that afternoon and evening an intense supercell tracked across the region roughly from Wichita Falls to Tyler, and over Wylie it produced a 5.25-inch hailstone — a record for the entire National Weather Service Fort Worth forecast area — alongside baseball and softball-size stones logged across town. By the Weather Service's own account, roughly 80% of the homes in Wylie were affected and the damage in the city alone exceeded $300 million; windshields, rear glass and sunroofs went by the thousand, Wylie ISD closed its schools because it could not keep students safe in the buildings, and a generation of Wylie's cars were totaled where they sat in the driveway.
Four months before that record, on December 26, 2015, the outbreak whose EF4 devastated Garland and Rowlett also sent an EF2 up the east shore of Lake Lavon from north of Lavon into downtown Copeville, minutes from Wylie, killing two people, injuring 119 and destroying some 30 businesses. The pattern has not gone away. On Sunday evening, June 11, 2023, the same line of storms that put baseball hail on the Denton County suburbs dropped golf-ball hail on Rockwall, Fate and Royse City, directly across Lake Ray Hubbard from Wylie's south side. And on June 13, 2012, storms across Dallas and Collin counties dropped baseball- to softball-size hail and cost an estimated $900 million, still one of the costliest hail days in Texas history.
