Hail history in Rowlett

Rowlett's worst night was not hail but the tornado of December 26, 2015: an EF4 that formed at 6:46 p.m., ran 13 miles from Garland across the city and out over Lake Ray Hubbard, and crossed the I-30 and Bush Turnpike interchange at EF3 strength, killing nine people whose cars were thrown from the highway. In Rowlett it tore through Windjammer Way, La Costa, Lagoon and Harbor Drive, Calypso, Cousteau and Mariner, Highgate Lane, Lake Bend and Woodside before dissipating at 7:02 p.m. Ten people died in the outbreak and 468 were injured. Storms that violent throw hail and debris together, and the dents turn up on cars parked well outside the damage path.

The hail record is long as well. On April 11, 2016, the supercell that set the National Weather Service Fort Worth hail record — a 5.25-inch stone — and damaged roughly 80% of the homes in Wylie, two towns north, passed with Rowlett inside the mapped hail swath and golf-ball hail reported across the lake in Rockwall. On Sunday evening, June 11, 2023, the same line of storms that put baseball hail on the Denton County suburbs dropped golf-ball hail on Rockwall, Fate and Royse City, directly across Lake Ray Hubbard. And on June 13, 2012, storms across Dallas and Collin counties dropped baseball- to softball-size hail and cost an estimated $900 million, still one of the costliest hail days in Texas history.
