Hail history in Prosper

March 14, 2024 was, by HailTrace's count, the busiest hail day on record in the United States, and Prosper was one of the named towns in the North Texas half of it. A storm that formed north of Fort Worth tracked toward Lewisville Lake in the early evening and kept going, dropping hail up to 3 inches across the county: golf-ball hail in Celina's Mustang Lakes and Carter Ranch, tennis-ball hail on the Little Elm–Frisco line at 6:50 p.m., and in Prosper enough of it that a spotter's photo simply read “Prosper hail in bunches” while a section of sheet-metal roof was torn from a strip mall near Preston Road and blown into the street. More than 51,000 properties took golf-ball-size hail or larger that evening.

The ridge has a longer record than that. On April 3, 2014, the outbreak that dropped 4.25-inch hail on Denton also left 2-inch stones in Frisco and northwest McKinney — on either side of Prosper — along with three tornadoes across Collin, Hunt and Hopkins counties. And on June 13, 2012, storms across Dallas and Collin counties dropped baseball- to softball-size hail and cost an estimated $900 million, still one of the costliest hail days in Texas history.
